The Candle of Hope

Gracious God, as we light the Candle of Hope,
fill us with your presence.
Let the light of this candle remind us
that hope is always within our reach.
Help us to share hope with those
who feel lost,
and to keep faith in your promises.
May this Advent be a season
of new beginnings and joyful anticipation.
Amen.

Hope Is a Star
(VU 7, verse 1)

Hope is a star
That shines in the night,
Leading us on
Till the morning is bright.

When God is a child
There's joy in our song.
The last shall be first
And the weak shall be strong,
And none shall be afraid.

Call to Worship

Brothers and sisters, awake!
The night is far gone, and the day is here.
Our Advent journey begins.
Let us lay aside our worrisome fears.
Let us put on the mantle of hope.
We come in hope to worship God.

Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus
(VU 2)

Come, thou long-expected Jesus,
Born to set thy people free:
From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in thee.

Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth thou art,
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

Born thy people to deliver;
Born a child and yet a king;
Born to reign in us for ever;
Now thy gracious kingdom bring.

By thine own eternal Spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By thine all-sufficient merit
Raise us to thy glorious throne.

Opening Prayer

God of wisdom,
our hearts yearn for the warmth
of your light in the world.
Increase our longing for Christ,
our Saviour as you strengthen us
to grow in hope that we may
see the light of his truth.
Amen.

After prayers for Grace & Transformation
We hear
Words of Assurance

Holy Spirit, in a world fraught
with trouble and trauma,
we dare say, we dare imagine,
we dare confess:
Yours' is the kingdom,
the power and the glory.
Help our souls imagine
your vision for us.
Amen.

All Earth Is Waiting
(VU 5)

All earth is waiting to see the Promised One,
And open furrows await the seed of God.
All the world, bound and struggling,
Seeks true liberty;
It cries out for justice
And searches for the truth.

Thus says the prophet to those of Israel:
'A virgin mother will bear Emmanuel,'
One whose name is 'God with us'
Our Saviour shall be;
Through whom hope will blossom
Once more within our hearts.

Mountains and valleys
Will have to be made plain;
Open new highways,
New highways for God.
Who is now coming closer,
So come all and see,
And open the doorways
As wide as wide can be.

In lowly stable
The Promised One appeared;
Yet feel that presence
Fhroughout the earth today,
For he lives in all Christians
And is with us now;
Again, on arriving,
Christ brings us liberty.

Waiting Wandering Wondering
(Ruth Elaine Schram)

Waiting,
Waiting for the light of the world,
Wandr'ing
Wand'ring in the darkness alone;
Wond'ring,
Wond'ing when the promised
redeemer will come...

Advent 1 Communion Insert

Invitation to Communion

Continue...
(Follow in the bulletin insert.)

God be with you.
And aloso with you
Lift up your hearts
We lift them up to God.
Let us give thanks to God.
It is right too give God thanks and praise.

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.

Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is the one that comes
in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest!

Music for Communion

It Came Upon The Midnight Clear

(Arr. Lucy Ann Warriner)

Bless us O God, and these your gifts.
Encourage us to share
your life and love,

Which makes us, and the gifts we share,
truly holy.

Prayer after Communion.

Sing Till Sundown
(VU 78)

Sing till sundown, hum your joy
Dress in starlight, girl and boy.
Man and woman climb the hill,
Warmed beyond December's chill,
Reeling, clapping, touch the air,
Is that fragrant music there?
Come the glory, gone the gloom:
In a wondrous huddled room.
Christ the Word we've longed to know
Calls us dancing through the snow.

Gladness deepens into grace,
Weaves its light on every face.
Let us wake the sleeping earth,
Celebrate the sweetest birth,
Pierce the night with festive cry,
Bloom in colours of the sky.
Bring the flute, the tambourine,
Wave the branch of evergreen.
Lost we were a grief ago,
Now we're dancing through the snow.
