Dr. Joe Schwarcz - "You Are What You Eat" - Jan 11, 2005

Tuesday afternoon, January 11, the folks of Summerlea and surroundings were treated to a
discussion by Dr. Joe Schwarcz of McGill University's Department of Chemistry, as he
spoke about "You Are What You Eat", sponsored by the Serendipity Group of the Summerlea
United Church Women. Author of five books and a weekly newspaper column, and popular on TV and radio, it soon became evident that Dr. Schwarcz's reputation as a popularizer of chemistry and its implications for real people is richly deserved. Ever the scientist, he enthralled us with his humorous illustrations of the need for accuracy in the search for truth in diet as in all things scientific. Our thanks to Dr. Schwarcz and to the Serendipity Group for this very informative and enjoyable presentation. Following are a few photos. They can be picked to view a larger version. |
The sanctuary was filled with folks from the greater Montreal area
in anticipation of Dr. Schwarcz' presentation.
Marg Lynn introduced the speaker,
enumerating just a few of his many accomplishments.
Dr. Schwarcz is a highly informed and involved speaker.
He uses numerous humourous illustrations to get the point across.
Serendipity president Mary Guynan presented Dr. Schwarcz with a token of appreciation
(in front of the screen to become a silhouette photo)
and thanked him on behalf of the Serendipity Group and everyone in attendance.
Folks were anxious to get a copy of Dr. Schwarcz' latest book,
"The Fly in the Ointment",
Following the talk, we had the opportunity to "be what we eat" in St. Andrew's Hall,
with refreshments provided by the Serendipity Group and friends.
