Jeffrey Barlow Ordained 26 May, 2007

After spending the last year as an intern minister and student minister at Summerlea while pursuing his last year of arduous studies at United Theological College, and some fifty years after completing his first theological degree, Jeffrey Barlow was ordained a minister of the United Church of Canada at John Abbott College in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue on Saturday evening, 26 May 2007. A number of Summerlea folk were in attendance at the service, which was held on the lawn in clear, cool weather. On Sunday, Jeffrey was inducted into the ministry at St. James United Church, his sponsoring congregation, and that evening he was royally feted at a reception in Dawson Hall of that church. Jeffrey will be ministering at St. Andrew's United Church in Lachine, so we may expect to see him doing his rounds on his purple bicycle (he is way ahead of the pack in green house gas reduction!) Congratulations and very best wishes to Jeffrey from all your friends at Summerlea. Following are a few snapshots of the event, which are pickable to see a larger version.

We took a few shots of the crowd and some of the Summerlea folks in attendance before the ceremony began. The table at the front held the bibles and chalices to be presented to the ordinands.

The ordinands presented themselves one by one, stating where they came from and who was their sponsoring church. Jeff was sponsored by St. James United Church.

Each candidate comes forward with representatives of the sponsoring church, kneels for the laying-on of hands, and receives a stole, bible and chalice.

On Sunday morning the ceremony continued during the 11 AM service at St. James United. The St. James minister, Rev. Arlen Bonnar, made some congratulatory parting remarks, and Jeff reciprocated by presenting him a candle to be remembered by, which Rev. Bonnar then lit.

Then once again Jeff kneeled, was re-presented with the stole received the previous evening, and began to lead the communion service.

That evening Jeff was royally feted at a reception / dinner that included entertainment by an opera singer and presentation of three more stoles for the seasons of the church. Among the participants were his brother from England and the family of his partner, Bernard. What a royal send-off! Congratulations and best wishes to Jeffrey from your friends at Summerlea.
