Sunday Oct 25, 2009 was Outreach Sunday at Summerlea, and featured guest speaker Susan
Palmai, a consultant who maintains a private practice in Conflict Management in Ottawa. She
accepted an assignment in the Middle East with the World Council of Churches from November
2008 to February 2009. The Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel
(EAPPI) endeavours to support Palestinians and Israelis living under stressful conditions
of occupation in the Middle East. She was posted to the city of Tulkarm in the West Bank
where she and her three team-mates carried out their duties. EAPPI stresses advocacy as a
means of spreading the word as to how the Israeli occupation is damaging to Palestinians
and Israelis alike. Ms. Palmai shared her stories of her witness 'On the ground', with projected photos. She had found the situation very difficult for all concerned, sometimes including the EAPPI representatives, but gave no suggestions as to how the whole problem can be resolved. She did not have time for questions during the service, but joined us for coffee and discussions afterward. Our thanks to the Outreach Committee and Ms. Palmai for providing us with some insight into the plight of the people in the occupied territories. We caught a few shots of her during her very interesting presentation. |
