As for several years, the congregation and friends from the wider community were warmly welcomed to the annual evening Candlelight Service. Organizing the evening were Ruth Heim and the members of the Summerlea Serendipity group. The program for the service can be seen here |
Members of the congregation and paricipants in the service can obtain a CD of the service by contacting John Osborne |
The music -- always a major part of the evening -- was the work of Summerlea's organist and choir master Connie Osborne Special thanks to all the usual choir members for their beautiful work and extra thanks to the seven extra voices who joined the choir for this special occasion. They were Anne Allmark, Dik Harris, Bob Kanemy, Brad Moffat, Jean Stuart, John Torunian and Andrejs Vitols. We can see the choir here in rehearsal with Connie just before the service. |
The service began with the choir arranged at the back of the Church for REJOICE & SING NOELLE. (By Allan Robert Petker) |

The guest speakere this year was the Reverend David Lefniski, most recently of South West United Church and Mission in Verdun. David challenged the congregation to consider how they as individuals and as a group will respond when called upon to do the unexpected or unwelcome. Will the response be "Impossible!" or will we pause to listen to the the "Fluttering of the wings" (as did Zacharia, Mary and Joseph when they heard the fluttering of the angel) and respond in kind? Will we be up to it? |
Following the Lord's Prayer, led by Ruth Heim, the choir, this time featuring the female voices, asked us movingly WERE YOU THERE ON THAT CHRISTMAS NIGHT? (By Natalie Sleeth) |
It couldn'e be a Candlelight Service without candles! As in the past, the lights are dimmed, the candles are lighted, and the congregation rises for the signing of LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH |
The service was followed by a lovely time of fellowship and refreshment in Acadia Hall provided for by the Serendipity and our Summerlea bakers. Thank you again to Ruth Heim and the Serendipity. |
